Reproducing colors in different formats can be daunting
Even the most skilled designer or production artist faces a challenge trying
to get color approved by the client to image correctly from design
to printing press, large format printer, or even the internet.
A Color Management System (CMS) is a group of software and hardware tools built to reconcile the different color capabilities of devices such as digital cameras, scanners, monitors, printers, imagesetters, and even printing presses. A CMS maps colors from a device with a large color gamut, such as a monitor, to a device witha smaller gamut, like a proofer or printing press. As a result, colors displayed on the monitor reflect what will be output at the chosen device.
Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of working with color, is that the "what you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG) approach doen't apply.
Until you have a created a perfect color balance between your input and output devices and the monitor, you may be seeing colors on-screen that don't exist in print.
